Job Description

Directly responsible to the Controller. Functionally responsible for maintaining a high standard of accounting and financial processes along with ensuring accurate financial reporting and control. The role is responsible for the North American (Canada and US) financial reporting.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Controller are detailed below, but not limited to the following:

  • Assist in managing all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, and Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting and Revenue Recognition.
  • Collaborate with the Controller/VP of Finance and finance team to develop and maintain internal controls and procedures to safeguard financial assets.
  • Prepare and publish monthly financial statements in compliance with official guidelines and requirements.
  • Manage journal entries and reconcile balance sheet accounts for monthly and annual closing requirements.
  • Prepare and review reports including spend/quantity analysis, cost breakdowns, and identify patterns to present to management.
  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants and escalate as needed.
  • Assist with overseeing the accounting operations of all subsidiary corporations.
  • Review the company's accounting information to identify and resolve inaccuracies or imbalances.
  • Utilize accounting IT system to facilitate processes and maintain records.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly excise tax filings for Canada and the US.
  • Provide insight and assistance (where applicable) in the development of a new ERP system.
  • All other duties/projects as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • Post Secondary Degree or Diploma in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or other related field.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in an accounting environment.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of GAAP, reporting and audit principles.
  • Experience with North American taxes including HST, State Sales Tax, and Consumer Use Tax.
  • CPA designation is highly preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and inter-personal skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all levels of the organization; able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Must demonstrate flexibility, strong commitment to meeting deadlines, and solid decision-making skills.
  • Self-motivator with ability to work independently.
  • Experience in financial monitoring, with the ability to explain variances and identify solutions.
  • High level of integrity, confidentially, and accountability
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in pressure situations with a calm and steady demeanour.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office with advanced Excel skills.
