Director of Retail Construction and Design, North America

Reports to: Vice President of Growth

Location: Vancouver, BC or Toronto, ON

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Director of Retail Construction and Design to join COBS Bread. Leading a team of project managers, this role will develop and drive strategies for new builds, refurbished bakeries, and store design in Canada and USA, while ensuring alignment with COBS Bread brand standards. The Director of Retail Construction and Design will work closely with various cross-functional teams, Franchisees, contractors, and external partners.

Key responsibilities include

  • Manage the Project Managers to deliver build outs on time and within budget, with a key focus on capital cost reduction
  • Provide road map and approach for bakery build outs and infrastructure projects
  • Oversee the finalization of the drawings and the entire build, and ensuring every aspect of the store is completed to design
  • Develop process around the duration of each stage of the build to ensure it is completed on time
  • Maintain the relationship with each external partner and address business opportunities for scale
  • New concepts comply with all statutory requirements and can be easily transferred from concept to build environment
  • Liaise with Product and Operation Teams to identify potential opportunities for improvement in design practicality and cost savings
  • Communicate with internal stakeholders around improvements to design and cost
  • Identifies and solicits bids from contractors, negotiates contracts, and monitors construction progress
  • Manage the budget of the construction contractor for the build at fair market value
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders across different departments
  • Identify and address potential project risks and obstacles, developing effective mitigation plans
  • Maintain regular communication with internal teams, conducting bi-weekly project meetings and potentially weekly meetings towards project completion.
  • Occasional travel within Canada and USA
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

What You Bring to the Table

  • 10+ years of program management experience in retail and/or hospitality construction or equivalent
  • 10+ years of senior management experience overseeing construction project management teams
  • Knowledge of construction and design in the retail industry is essential, exposure to the hospitality sector is an asset
  • Proven track record of managing projects from inception to close-out.
  • Relevant certifications in project management or construction management
  • Demonstrated ability in construction budget management, retail design, value engineering, and change order negotiation.
  • A dedication to operational efficiency, investing in processes and systems to improve team and business results
  • Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders, manage conflict and negotiate
  • High-level problem-solving skills, tact, and diplomacy
  • Excellent presentation skills to various audiences and mediums
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications, especially Excel and Project
  • Valid driver’s license and passport as travel is required
