Position Title: Specialist, Vision Rehabilitation and Specialist, Orientation amp; Mobility

Location: St. Catharines, ON

Term: Full time, Permanent

Rate: $26.64/hour

Reports To: Regional Manager, Service and Operations

I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

In this dual role position, you will cover a broad range of duties and responsibilities include providing instruction and guidance in compensatory independent living skills, and assistive technology, enabling individuals living with vision loss to independently carry out daily activities. As an Orientation and Mobility specialist you will be instructing individuals with vision loss on orientation and mobility which aid in the acquisition of movement skills and the concept development of spatial orientation, and environmental analysis related to independent travel by individuals who are visually impaired.

II. Essential Functions

This position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

Vision Rehabilitation Specialist:

  • Assesses the independent living needs and abilities of individuals.
  • With the individual, identifies and prioritizes goals, and develops an independent living plan.
  • Teaches adaptive skills for independent living in areas of personal management, household management, communication, leisure activities, indoor orientation amp; mobility skills, and technology training.
  • Assists individuals in the acquisition and use of assistive devices.
  • Promotes self-advocacy skills for individuals living with vision loss to access community programs and resources (i.e. leisure programs, acquisition of adaptive equipment, etc.).
  • Maintains all case data and documentation consistent with Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada Systems and Procedures.
  • Adherence to professional healthcare documentation, charting, and reporting.
  • Provides consultation, public education, and in-service training.
  • Performs administrative duties including, but not limited to service tracking, benchmarking, report writing, etc.
  • Maintaining, facilitating, and conducting group sessions and presentations.
  • Orientation amp; Mobility Specialist:

  • Conducts assessments and documents the Oamp;M needs and personal goals of individuals with vision loss.
  • With the individual, identifies and prioritizes goals and develops an orientation amp; mobility service plan.
  • Teaches concept development, spatial and sensory awareness, pre-cane skills, cane techniques, and travel skills.
  • Encourages and provides support in assertiveness/advocacy skills to individuals as it relates to orientation and mobility.
  • Provides information and lessons in the use of electronic travel aids.
  • Provides tactile maps as required.
  • Teaches sighted guide to family members and others.
  • Acts as a resource person for information regarding guide dog schools. Provide skill development to prepare individuals to work with a guide dog. Works with guide dog schools as required.
  • Acts as a resource in matters related to accessible design and the built environment.
  • Maintains all case data and documentation consistent with VLRC Systems and Procedures.
  • Performs administrative duties including but not limited to service tracking, benchmarking, report writing, etc.
