Position Summary:
Contribute to the provision of oral health clinical services, oral health screening, assessment, and preventive treatment and instruction for community members in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards. Responsible for the efficient operation of the dental clinic as well as maintaining infection prevention and control standards. Contributes to raising Haldimand and Norfolk’s awareness and knowledge of the importance of oral health as it relates to overall health.
Position Description:
- Responsible for delivery of the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS), and associated oral health protocols.
- Prepare clinic for various dental procedures. Maintain proper infection prevention and control standards.
- Reprocess and sterilize dental equipment and instruments according to infection prevention and control standards. Cleans and maintains dental equipment.
- Provide clinical chairside assistance to the hygienist and/or dentist.
- Record clinical findings during assessments
- Instruct and demonstrate proper technique for brushing and flossing. Make recommendations to parents/guardians and clients to maintain good oral hygiene at home.
- Apply fluoride varnish in the clinic, and community.
- Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns, as appropriate from general public etc
- Track, prepare and enter data using the required software in a timely manner. Compile statistics and help to prepare reports
- Order and maintain inventories of dental supplies.
- Assist with oral health promotion and program promotion activities
- Contribute to the identification and prioritization of areas for improvement within the six dimensions of quality (safe, effective, efficient, timely, person-centred and equitable).
- Engage with colleagues in a systematic approach to quality improvement, including the definition of the purpose and scope; development, testing and implementation of change ideas; and measurement of reach and impact.
- Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with program and health unit objectives
Requirements
Knowledge and Experience:
- Successful completion of a Community College Dental Assisting Diploma
- Current Level 1 Certification by the Ontario Dental Assistants Association (ODAA)
- Over one (1) year, up to two (2) years of clinical dental assisting experience required
- Dental assisting experience with seniors considered an asset
- Previous experience in community dentistry considered an asset
Skills and Abilities:
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Basic knowledge of the principles of health promotion
- Computer expertise in corporate standard software (Microsoft Office) and department specific software to data search and entry and to create and modify word processed documents
- Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
