Job Description

The Canadian Press is looking for an experienced, dedicated and dynamic journalist with keen news judgment to handle a wide range of duties in reporting and editing news across the country.

The successful candidate could be asked to work any time, but the current opening involves joining our afterhours operations overnight. The successful candidate must be able to work independently, jump on breaking news, alert managers when necessary and edit copy coming in from various reporters and the broadcast desk. This role will be based in one of our bureau cities, such as Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Edmonton, or Vancouver.

Responsibilities

  • The successful applicant will oversee the news report during a critical time when most departments and bureaus are unstaffed, watching social media and other sources for breaking news across the country.
  • Have an ability to jump on a story when it breaks and know when to inform regional supervisors and department heads that they need to assign staff in their area.
  • Recognize any holes in the news report and fill them by tracking down news releases and making phone calls.
  • Have command of CP style and an ability to write stories quickly for the wire.
  • Edit print and broadcast stories from our reporters across the country, as well as from the broadcast desk, including the hourly Newswatch.
  • Ensure all regular features and updates go out to clients on schedule (i.e. regional updates; sports watch; entertainment reports)
  • Track the Associated Press wire for stories with a strong Canadian angle that need to be developed or given greater prominence on the CP World wire.
  • Record audio and work with studio editor to send out clips from live/breaking news events, when required
  • Keep senior supervisors up to speed on overnight stories they need to be aware of for the start of their day

Skills and Experience Required

  • Journalism degree or equivalent experience
  • Five years of experience working in a real-time, digital newsroom
  • Solid news judgment and solid writing and editing skills
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and pitch in to help the team wherever needed
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to organize time and workflow effectively
  • Bilingualism is an asset but not a requirement

La personne choisie devrait être disponible pour travailler peu importe le moment, mais le poste présentement à pouvoir concerne les opérations hors des heures normales en soirée. Cette personne devra être en mesure de travailler de façon autonome, couvrir les nouvelles de dernière heure, alerter les superviseurs si nécessaire et réviser la copie en provenance de divers reporters et du pupitre radio. Responsabilités

  • Maîtriser le style de la PC et savoir rédiger rapidement des articles pour le fil de presse.
