Job Description

As a Junior Land Use Planner at Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC), you will play an important role in supporting the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) in all aspects of land use planning. Working closely with senior planners and other stakeholders, this role offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in urban planning and contribute to the sustainable growth of one of Canada's largest school boards.

Requirements

What you will do:

Research and Analysis:

Conduct research and site analyses review and summarize official plan policies, zoning by-laws, municipal planning studies, adjacent developments and other land use planning matters.

Development Application Review:

Analyze and assess the impact of proposed developments on TDSB properties and community.

Work collaboratively with TDSB staff to assess impact of planning and development activities on school accommodation.

Documentation and Reporting:

Summarize and present research to TLC and TDSB staff.

Prepare reports, correspondence, briefing notes, presentations, and visual aids.

Monitor City Council/Committee agendas and reports. Manage and maintain accurate records and documentation related to planning initiatives, development applications and projects.

Community Engagement:

Engage with TLC and TDSB staff, City of Toronto staff, other stakeholders, and community groups to present information, gather input and address concerns.

Represent TLC and TDSB’s interests at City of Toronto Community Council meetings, public consultation meetings, and open houses, occasionally outside of regular business hours, as needed.

Support Senior Planners and other TLC/TDSB Staff:

Provide support to senior planners and other TLC/TDSB staff in the planning of new schools, including exploring opportunities for redevelopment of underutilized TDSB sites. Provide administrative and research support as needed.

Professional Development:

Stay informed about policy changes, current trends and best practices in land use planning.

Seek opportunities for professional growth and continuing education.

What you will have:

A University degree in Urban Planning, with preference given to those with a related Master’s degree or related work experience up to 6 months.

Eligible for membership in the Canadian Institute of Planning (CIP) and Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI).

Knowledge of provincial planning legislation/policies and City of Toronto planning policies.

Understanding of development approval process in Ontario.

Strong analytical and research skills.

Well organized and detail-oriented.

Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation abilities.

Strong computer skills proficiency at Excel, Power Point is required; experience using mapping tools such as GIS is considered an asset. Ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team environment.
