Job Description

Valard, is Canada’s premier utility contractor, as well as head of the Valard Group of Companies AND part of the Quanta Group, the largest electrical power contractor in North America. Valard has full-service capabilities for transmission, distribution, substations, foundations, telecommunications, and renewable energy.

This is a field based position, reporting to the Area Manager. The Area Supervisor is responsible for general clerical duties as well as providing directions to the crews in the assigned area or project. The Area Supervisor provides the leadership, expertise and coordination of the day to day operation in the field. Additionally, they provide support for various departments and work closely with Foreman and client representative as required.

KEY (CORE) DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervising Field Operations

  • Ensure a safe work environment for all Valard employees, contractors and visitors by working closely with the company’s Health and Safety Department.
  • Organize and facilitate monthly safety meetings. Arranging presenters as required on various safety related topics.
  • Review job requirements and be fully briefed on the scope of the project before attending tender and start up meetings with the client; knowing the manpower, equipment and tool requirements.
  • Maintaining a list of equipment unit numbers and tools that are assigned to each crew in your area. Regular audits of equipment and tools.
  • Develop and oversee schedules for the teams
  • Employees assigned to the various projects have the certification and orientations required.
  • Provide supervision of the construction and maintenance of power systems as assigned within the region.
  • Provide supportive leadership and direction to Foreman’s and employees.
  • Ensure work orders are carried out as per the specifications outlined and First Calls are completed as required.
  • Daily site visits to ensure safety protocol is being followed, all required equipment and tools are available to complete the work assigned.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work completed, obtaining client authorization and invoice accordingly.
  • Maintain good relations with persons inside and outside the company as a representative of Valard.
  • Ensure new hires are placed in positions commensurate with their skill level.
  • Determining placement on pay schedule and approval and submission of rate increases.
  • Ensuring that company property, vehicles and credit cards assigned are returned when employees leave employment.

Business Development/Client Relations

  • Supervisors will work closely with Area Managers to strengthen relations with existing clients and pursue new business opportunities.
  • Managing client expectations and negotiating toward successful and positive results when issues arise.
  • Facilitating ongoing communications with the client and ensuring responsiveness to issues/requests.
  • Assist Area Managers in the preparation of tenders, negotiate contracts and extensions.
  • Increasing Valard’s profile within the industry.

Personnel Training/Development and Evaluation

  • In conjunction with the Area Manager, Health and Safety and Human Resources, assist in developing internal programs to address employee development and training requirements.
  • Performance Appraisals and selection and mentoring of individuals with the skills and experience to take on leadership positions.
  • Assist the Forman’s in dealing with disciplinary issues and ensure that proper documentation is provided to the employee and a copy is maintained on the personnel file.
  • Provide direction and information to ensure compliance with Valard’s policies and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS amp; ABILITIES:

  • Certified Journeyman Certificate.
  • Minimum 2 years of management experience, coupled with 5-7 years of experience in the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office applications.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy confidentiality concerning financial and employee files.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Decisive decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and high accuracy.
  • Highly effective organizational capabilities.
