Full Time, Permanent

Toronto, ON (Home Based)

Reports to: Vice President, Research amp; International Affairs and Chief Accessibility Officer

We're looking for a mission-driven Director, Research who is passionate about creating more accessible, inclusive, and equitable communities across Canada where people with low vision have unlimited opportunities and can experience life free from barriers and discrimination.

Your Impact at CNIB
  • Help develop an international research program, including community engagement, building collaborative networks, writing grants, and contributing to strategic planning.
  • Lead project planning, implementation, and management of research studies.
  • Lead a diverse team of researchers conducting longitudinal studies to understand the quality of life, lived experiences, social and health outcomes of persons of all ages who are blind, Deafblind and have low vision.
  • Prepare and review research materials and documentation, ethics review, survey instruments, interview guides, etc.
  • Communicate findings through community engagement, formal presentations, and reports/publications.
  • Oversee the development of training and education materials that arise from work of the Research team.

Requirements

Who you are:

Education and Certifications

  • PhD in vision related field, and at least 5 years of research experience since graduation.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated independent research skills.
  • Experience in research with children (preferably those with neurological and ocular vision loss).
  • Experience in international research collaborations.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with others through teaching, supervising and collaborating, with emphasis on respect and mutual strengthening of capacity.
  • Commitment to accountability and advocacy for intersectional structural inequities.
  • Exposure to blindness, Deafblindness and low vision across sectors (academic, not for profit, community).
  • Experience with development of evidence-based practices and evaluation methods.
  • Experience in knowledge translation to communicate technical, conceptual, and process-based information.
  • Experience working collaboratively in groups to enhance cross-functional collaboration and deliver best practices that are meaningful.
  • Deep understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods, data analysis and project management/administration principles.
  • A strong functional background in research, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead or support projects, coordinate and manage people respectfully and uses methods that creates accessibility and inclusion.
  • Comfortable producing written and verbal communications, including correspondence to support senior leadership in decision making, announcements, presentations, and more.
  • Personal or professional experience relating to blindness and sight loss is considered an asset.
  • Personal or professional experience working with assistive technology and/or accessible environments is considered an asset.
