The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Planner / Scheduler for our Calgary Shop location (8700 Venture Ave SE; not transit accessible). Reporting to the Director of Project Services, the Planner / Scheduler is responsible for overall development and maintenance of resource-loaded schedules across Business Units, establishing best-practices and policies, and the collection of data required to prepare, update and monitor projects. In addition, the successful candidate will:
- Develop project schedules from written scopes of work, drawings and 3D models, in accordance with Alstar’s standard Work Breakdown Structure
- Link activities using predecessor and successor logic according to best practices in order to establish float and critical path
- Assign resources that correspond to Alstar’s departments and ensure hours are aligned with the project budget and remaining work
- Evaluate changes in quantities from the Execution Plan compared to the plan at time of bid, and use those quantities in conjunction with standard productivities to establish changes to budget dollars and hours to set the cost baseline. This may require completing takeoffs of marked up drawings
- Work with the Operations group, including Project Managers to lock down baselines
- Modify / reset baselines as required following best practices and Alstar policies for change management
- Analyze resource utilization across departments across all projects using Primavera P6
- Work with the departments and project managers to level resource assignments in the manner which maximizes project outcomes and minimizes negative impacts. This responsibility requires a great deal of creativity and negotiation skills and is key to successful operations at Alstar.
- Support claim evaluations amp; mitigation issues
- Work in Primavera P6 and MS Project as required. Convert MS Project projects into P6 projects
- Review Client RFP documents including Scope Of Work
Requirements
- Minimum 4 years of experience working in a heavy industrial construction or manufacturing environment in Scheduling, Project Controls, or Project Management is required
- A scheduling / planning background is required. This position is eligible to earn hours towards P.Eng designation under direct supervision of an Engineer. This position is also eligible to earn hours towards CIQS and AACEI professional designations
- Certifications with APEGA, AACEI, or PMI would be an asset but are not required
- Working knowledge and competency with spreadsheets and word processing
- Able to analyze and present data using charts, summation, and/or pivot tables
- Ability to work within Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc)
- Proficiency in NavisWorks and other Autodesk software products would be an asset
- Technically inclined with strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Expert organizational skills and ability to multitask
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and with confidence is essential
- Self-directed, able to set priorities and meet deadlines
- High degree of competence, reliability, and judgement demonstrated in all aspects of work
- Commitment to continuous improvement
- Comfortable interacting with external stakeholders, i.e. clients and vendors
- Good understanding of technical reporting/formatting
