Listening to Albertans. Going deeper to understand who they are and where they’re going. Translating the complex world of banking and investing into brilliantly simple solutions. Through all this, we believe we can create happiness. This is the ATB way.

**This is a 3-6 month temporary position, with potential to be extended**

Job Number: REQ1451

Location: Alberta

The Head of Special Investments has a passion for making a difference and is committed to ATB’s evolution and success. Taking on this new role, you will be primarily responsible for making recommendations to executive leadership in relation to assets that are held, sold, or otherwise disposed of that have been acquired through loan recovery proceedings or workout. This role is accountable for day to day operations and management of the assets that are transferred into the ATB special purpose vehicle subsidiary corporations (SPVs). That includes the authority to retain managers, legal counsel and other third parties in alignment with ATB’s regulatory framework and within budget as approved by the SPV Investment Committee. The SPV leader will be responsible to provide reporting to applicable oversight committees as it relates to the portfolio and its performance. The role will interface with ATB’s internal and external partners and drive thoughtful and thorough analysis and due diligence to successfully complete transactions. Success will be dictated by the ability to consistently source and close transactions by leveraging network and industry recognized expertise.

The Head of Special Investments is a dynamic leader that motivates, grows, and engages team members to provide informed and sound consultation to all key stakeholders. The incumbent is expected to play a diverse role at ATB ranging from a trusted advisor to a change driver, creating value in both cases for the organization and its stakeholders. The person in this role will have a strong internal drive, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a passion for making a difference through their work. A trailblazer who constantly seeks new ways to learn and grow. This person, ideally, has experienced a severe economic downturn or shock, and participated in either the turnaround or challenges of asset management.

You will find success as:

  • A strong collaborator, connector, influencer and challenger who builds successful relationships across the enterprise, across industries, and with all key stakeholders
  • A highly adaptable driver of change with an innovative mindset to effectively shape the business in a rapidly changing environment.
  • You leverage the experience of professional team members to create customized solutions for the portfolio’s investment.
  • A strong leader with the ability to establish and communicate a motivating vision for the future while developing an effective and high performing team.
  • An effective decision maker that has the ability to take complex and diverse information and formulate a balanced and risk based decision that reflects our clients needs.
  • A highly agile individual that is able to move across a diverse range of issues, industries, investments and situations over the course of their day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conceive, organize and implement deal sourcing strategies and service clients as the face of ATB’s special purpose vehicle subsidiary corporation.
  • Provide strategic advice on the composition and quality of the asset portfolio and make recommendations on when to monetize/exit positions. In unison with ATB Senior Leaders, continuously review the performance of the portfolio; initiating action to resolve current and future risks, understanding the current and future economic cycle, and what changes are necessary to respond to them.
  • Provide oversight to the SPV portfolio, ensuring the risk appetite and growth requirements of the organization are respected, the risk of the transaction is appropriately identified and managed, an appropriate decision is arrived at, and the process creates value and is effective.
  • Ensure an appropriate balance is maintained between managing the size and tenure of the SPV portfolios and the risk of loss. Facilitate a continuous review, monitor, measure, and evaluation of the strategies, policies, processes and practices to ensure they remain effective, create value to the organization, and consider the needs of our clients.
  • Design and document SPV processes and oversee the implementation of the SPV policy and monitor compliance to it.
  • Produce SPV program reporting in accordance with policy requirements.
  • Review applications for and conduct approved transactions in accordance with any specified transaction requirements and complete pre/post transaction quality reviews.
