Job Description

Tangent is currently seeking a motivated and skilled Lead Surfacing to be part of our growing team. As a member of a multidisciplinary development team, the Lead Surfacing will collaborate with the Studio Art Director to establish artistic goals for a given project(s). The candidate will be in charge of following the art team’s work, coach team members, and validate production outcomes. We’re looking for an experienced Surfacing Lead to help us bring this new world to life.


Responsibilities:

  • Balance aesthetic standards and technical requirements to create quality models
  • Excellent visual skills and attention to detail
  • Interpret and implement notes and feedback from directors and supervisors in a timely and qualitative manner
  • Work and communicate with the modeling and rigging teams to ensure assets are built to achieve the intended lighting/lookdev requirements
  • Communicate with Supervisor and CG Supervisor on concerns ahead of time
  • Assist with mentoring artists as needed
  • Meet production deadlines and maintain regular communication with the production team
  • Carry out duties in a professional and positive manner
  • Create high quality UVs, textures and shaders for characters, environments and props
  • Capable of creating stylized, procedural, and photorealistic textures in several specified styles
  • Work within the defined pipeline
  • Troubleshoots creative and technical issues as they arise
  • Ensures that Surfacing files are complete and ready for lighting
  • Works within a production schedule and follows strict deadlines
  • Mentor and help train junior Surfacing Artists
  • Participate in meetings and asset reviews

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in feature animation and/or visual effects production.
    Excellent knowledge in Substance
  • Highly motivated, pro-active, with a solid work ethic and positive attitude
  • Good knowledge of the production process and pipeline
  • Able to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently
  • Ability to accept accountability for own actions
  • Ability to deliver work on time and meet set performance objectives
  • Strong artistic eye for detail with the ability to follow reference material and concept art
  • Ability to create high quality texture maps
  • Understanding of shading concepts
  • Proficiency in Maya required
  • Experience in shading and rendering with RenderMan and/or Arnold an asset
  • Experience with Mari, Katana, UVLayout, Mudbox and/or Zbrush an asset
