Job Description

Bonsai’s mission is to help people find and buy the products they want, as soon as they realize they want them. We began in 2016 as a streetwear style and news app. Now we’re leading the market shift to content-driven commerce. We are helping publishers launch e-commerce as a new line of business. We already do this for over 200M+ monthly unique visitors on some of North America’s leading publishers, including BuzzFeed and Complex. We’ve been featured in the Wall Street Journal and Business Insider for leading the charge in a new wave of native commerce, but the opportunity is still largely untapped.

Our technology allows users to transact natively while browsing content. We make the journey from seeing a product to buying it possible in two taps. Our vision is to make this possible everywhere you discover products. For publishers, we provide a powerful revenue alternative to ads that also improves the user experience. For merchants, Bonsai allows them to capture customers while they browse content, right when purchasing intent is being formed.

At Bonsai, we pride ourselves on the transparent and performance-driven environment we’ve created for our team. We value making data driven-decisions and taking calculated risks that add value to our users.

The Business Intelligence amp; Data Analyst (Co-op) will become an integral and influential part of our Data Team. You will help drive the direction of data insights for internal and external users. You will get to work firsthand with the e-commerce data of publishing leaders like Buzzfeed and Complex. This role will run from May 3rd, 2021 - August 27th 2021.

The role (in a nutshell):

  • Understand business needs and build dashboards (Looker) to serve user needs.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of our business KPIs and generate actionable insights on how to continuously improve on them.
  • Create visually compelling, data-driven presentations with actionable tactics and strategies to drive revenue.
  • Conduct in-depth data analysis using a variety of internal and external tools (Looker, Excel, etc) to identify trends, diagnose issues, and drive strategy by leveraging measurable events.

Your background:

  • Enrolled in an analytical program - Mathematics, Computer Science, Business Administration, Accounting, Engineering, etc.
  • Excellent analytical skills. You are an expert working with data (e.g. Looker, Tableau, Google Sheets, MS Excel, Amplitude, etc.), planning data collection (e.g. which user events should we track), and extracting insights from that data. The term ‘quantitative rigour’ gets you excited.
  • Strong communication skills. Ability to create compelling presentations (e.g. MS PowerPoint, Google Slides) using data. You can speak with concision and change your communication style based on your audience.
  • A self-starter mindset. You are able to take initiative, work without supervision and begin projects independently.
  • Experience with at least 2 of the following - Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, Google Sheets/MS Excel, Google Slides/MS PowerPoint
  • *Other. Don’t have some of the above experience but confident you’ll crush it anyway? Feel free to apply and prove it to us.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with SQL, LookML, statistical models, A/B testing

Please note: This position is supported by a government wage subsidy program. Applicants who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply:

  • Either a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or a protected person defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
  • Must be registered as a full-time student in a post-secondary institution program;
  • The student must not be an international student with a work permit; and
  • The student must not be an immediate family member of the employer with the same employer previously.

At Bonsai, we are committed to building and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where our employees feel valued, heard, and supported. We believe that a commitment to diversity, inclusion and belonging enables us to do the best work of our lives - building the future of content and commerce! We strongly encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds, experience, and perspectives regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, citizenship, disability, and national origin.

Bonsai welcomes and encourages applications from people with disabilities. Accommodations are available upon request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the hiring and selection process. If you require accommodations or have any questions, please email us at .
