Reporting to the Vice President, Business amp; Corporate Credit, the Director, Business Credit Strategy will be responsible for the management and completion of complex issues, initiatives and projects (i.e. Single Name/Common Risk Exposure and determination; lending authorities for Business lenders, loan origination project) that relate to the Business Credit, Financial Markets, and Capital Markets area including the completion of white papers and the implementation of any resulting policies, processes and procedures.

They will be responsible for maintaining a current knowledge of the operations of the Credit Risk and Risk Advisory groups, the lending trends and best practices in the areas noted previously, non-lending trends that could impact these areas, and existing and developing regulatory guidance and board level policies.

This position will be the primary point person for all issues, initiatives and projects related to the areas noted above and will work with subject matter experts in the Credit Risk and Risk Advisory groups to evaluate various complex situations, develop a series of solutions to resolve and facilitate the implementation of the one selected by the leadership group.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the Vice President, Business amp; Corporate Credit and Risk Advisory, this position will be responsible for dealing with complex issues, initiatives and projects relating to the Credit Risk and Risk Advisory areas. This role will be the primary project person for Business matters beyond $1mm. They will be tasked with the management of these areas including investigating and understanding the subject; completing internal and external research; developing and recommending options to resolve; implementing the option agreed upon; and modifying or developing any related policy or process documents. The individual will have the benefit of working with subject matter experts both within the Strategic Support Unit and the Area of Expertise, however will be largely expected to work independently and without material direction.
  • Subject matter expert on the why behind credit, the policy, guidelines and regulatory requirements that ATB operates under. The go to person for interpretation of policies and guidelines (including regulatory issues) therefore coaching and training/mentorship required.
  • Responsible for the timely review and updating of all Credit Risk and Risk Advisory related Operating Guides and board policies and frameworks, along with all internal Credit Risk and Risk Advisory processes. This will include the continued efficiency, effectiveness, market relevance, and customer first focus of each of these areas and making recommendations for their modification.
  • Expected to develop and maintain internal and external relationships to keep current with internal and external developments, trends, issues and initiatives. Key internal relationships will include associates in Credit Risk, Risk Advisory, Underwriting amp; Sales Support, Experience Office, and Business Adaptations groups.
  • Expected to take Credit Risk regulatory requirements and board policies and frameworks and translate them into easily articulated, effective and customer first policies and processes that can be readily understood and applied with confidence by lenders and adjudicators. OSFI, Basel, EUCB, and various U.S. regulators issue advisory and guidance documents. The challenge is these documents can be vague and provide little background as to the why and how it impacts Credit. It will be incumbent on this role to search out the why and develop an hypothesis and apply this to what ATB desires to do as an organization.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President, Business amp; Corporate Credit and Risk Advisory, the role will work to develop, maintain and measure Key Performance Indicators that speak to the effectiveness and customer first focus on the group.
  • Look for trends and opportunities to enhance the group’s performance, fully flushing out the options and making the appropriate recommendations for changes to the appropriate teams.
