This is an exciting opportunity for a hungry, driven, people-oriented individual who wants to lead a dynamic team focused on the turnaround of challenging client files to enhance both the client relationship and probability to fuel recovery across various portfolios within the Turnaround and Restructuring Group (TRG) and the Turnaround Assistance Group (TAG).

Reporting to the VP, Risk Advisory and Management (RAM) this role will lead our TRG and TAG teams which provide preventive care, rehabilitation, and recovery of ATB’s higher risk Business borrowers (i.e. corporate and commercial) within the context of ATB’s 10-Year Strategy. This leadership position must leverage internal connections, motivate, and guide the TRG and TAG teams to identify unique solutions and opportunities to bring files back to a positive state.

Preventive care involves working collaboratively with lenders and performing borrowers that are experiencing some challenges to diagnose their problems and provide solutions that will enable them to return to a more normalized level of risk. Customer Obsession will figure prominently in these situations within the context of restoring the long-term health of the borrower and ensuring the preservation of the shareholder’s equity while respecting ATB’s Risk Appetite and profitability. This may entail leading tough conversations and challenging the views of both the management of the borrower and the lender involved.

Rehabilitation involves working with borrowers that have achieved an unacceptable level of risk. It will involve diagnosing the problem, assessing the probability of a recovery and where prevalent and reasonable, prescribing what must be done to return to a normalized level of risk and preserve shareholders’ equity within a reasonable period of time. Similar to preventive care, Customer Obsession and Risk Appetite will be prominent considerations in rehabilitation to the extent there is progress and a co-operative approach, failing which the focus will likely pivot to loss minimization.

Recovery involves the efficient realization of ATB loans’ collateral to maximize loan recovery and shareholders’ equity while respecting the dignity of borrowers and, wherever possible, working collaboratively to minimize the impact on the borrower. To clarify, this role encapsulates the recovery of impaired exposures gt;$2MM; impaired loans lt;$2MM recoveries will continue to be affected by the Asset Management team that reports to the VP RAM.

The TRG and TAG groups have the benefit of seeing what can go wrong and how resilient ATB lending practices may be. Given this, it is their responsibility to effectively provide feedback to both the Areas of Expertise and Credit groups on, practices, policies, guidelines and lender development by providing factual information that evidences deficiencies, provides practical and effective solutions to resolve them, and where applicable, offers expertise in developing training solutions.
