Reporting to the Engineering Manager and based out of Valard’s Calgary Transmission Office, the Transmission Line Design Lead Engineer is responsible for the design and co-ordination of overhead transmission line EPC projects ranging from 69kV to 500kV and higher throughout Canada and abroad.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Design lead for the design of overhead transmission systems ranging from 69kV to 500kV and higher- Design management, project co-ordination, and key client representative
- Design of various structure types using wood poles, lattice towers, and steel poles using PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER
- Perform engineering calculations related to the design of transmission systems
- Development of material and construction specifications
- Preparation of Design Requirements Drawings (DRDs) for lattice towers and steel poles
- Provide procurement support, material take-offs, requisitions, and technical evaluations
- Development and co-ordination of supplier quality surveillance programs for major materials
- Layout and structure spotting of transmission lines using PLS-CADD
- Assist in the preparation of bids and proposals throughout Canada and abroad
- Provide construction support
- Assign work and give instructions, advice and technical guidance to other engineers and technical support staff
- Maintain and enhance relationships with internal groups and clients
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or Technology Diploma in Electrical, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering
- Registered as a Professional Engineer in any jurisdiction in Canada or the ability to obtain registration through reciprocity
- 10+ years of experience in the design, engineering, construction, and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution systems
- Extensive experience with Power Line Systems software including PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER is required
- Thorough understanding of transmission line design codes and utility standards
- Thorough understanding of transmission line materials and construction methods
- Familiarity with oil and gas, mining, and renewable energy systems considered an asset
- Demonstrated technical writing and interpersonal skills; excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
Additional Information:
Maintain a class 5 driver’s license in good standing- Travel to various areas within Canada and abroad is required for site visits, meetings, and supplier audits
