Indigenous Education - Middle School Teacher - Grade 6 to 8

FTE: 1.0 - Temporary

Multiple Lethbridge School Division locations

The expected start is August 24, 2021 and will complete on February 8, 2022, or upon return of incumbent.

The Lethbridge School Division is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic individual to serve as Middle School Teacher-Indigenous Education within our Schools.

The primary responsibility of the Middle School Teacher- Indigenous Education is to support the delivery of curriculum through collaboration with school staff, department managers, specialists, teachers and the Indigenous Education Team. The job plans the delivery of academic, vocational and leadership building, within a culturally sensitive context for all students in the Division while supporting meaningful relationships specifically with students of Indigenous ancestry.

The Middle School Teacher- Indigenous Education also supports holistic learning in areas such as cultural teachings, traditions and spirituality through the Alberta Program of Studies, First Nations Métis and Inuit Outcomes. Specific Teaching Education is preferred and knowledge of Blackfoot Language and Culture is an asset.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Develop programming in collaboration with the teacher in classrooms and non-traditional settings;
  • Build resource library in collaboration with liaisons and teachers;
  • Engage in delivery and create sustainable programs;
  • Collaborate with teachers to align curriculum with the appropriate level learner outcomes;
  • Provide positive role-model for students by participating in scheduled and informal recreational activities;
  • Assist with and participate in special events, conferences, expositions and other professional learning activities;
  • Identify opportunities to support learning outside of school hours;
  • Demonstrate and coordinate Indigenous traditional activities into curriculum;
  • Coordinate Indigenous Family Night at various school sites;
  • Teach Indigenous Culture at the middle school level;

This teacher will possess the following skills and/or attributes:

  • A sound understanding of teaching context and contributing variables;
  • Deep understanding of subject disciplines taught and pedagogical approaches based on best practice;
  • Understanding of sound planning, assessment and instructional practices;
  • Understanding of classroom management strategies that contribute to a positive learning environment;
  • The use of technologies in meaningful ways for teaching and learning;
  • Qualities of a reflective practitioner who engages in professional learning to grow in areas reflected in the Teacher Quality Standard;
  • Commitment to the school community with respect to professional relationships;
  • A belief in collaborative practice and teamwork;
  • Active contribution to school and student activity, and overall ability to develop effective relationships within the school and community;
  • A dedicated commitment to supporting students of Indigenous ancestry;
  • Effective time management and organizational abilities within a school context;
  • Candidate will have extensive experience working with Indigenous populations and infusing Indigenous culture and language into the classroom.
  • Candidate may have the ability to instruct Blackfoot language at the Middle School level.
  • Candidate will be able to work autonomously in educational settings.
  • Candidate has successful evidence of working collaboratively with colleagues

Requirements

Applicants must possess or be eligible to obtain an Alberta Teaching Certificate.

  • A police information check; including Vulnerable Sector Check from Police Services or an RCMP detachment that does not have any charges or convictions.
  • A satisfactory Intervention Record Check from South Region Alberta Child and Family Services.
