Job Description
Valard Construction LP is one of Canada’s largest powerline contractors, serving clients in both public amp; private sectors. We offer construction services in overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems, substations, fibre optics, as well as substation and transmission foundations.
The Heavy Equipment Operator MAT Grapple Loader Operator is responsible for operating MAT Grapple Loaders in a safe and appropriate manner. The operator may also be asked to operator other heavy equipment including but not limited to trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers, and other pieces of equipment. The operator must also clean, maintain, and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies, and procedures.
Requirements
Responsibilities:
Successful candidates will be required to work away as needed and be responsible for the following tasks:
- Safety:
- Perform work in accordance with all organizational requirements, as well as provincial and federal health and safety standards and legislation, ensuring highest standard of safety is upheld
- Operate machinery in a safe manner
- Adhere to applicable traffic standards
- Document all required logbooks, hours, maintenance records of equipment being operated, and report on required basis
- Responsible for the safety of labourer or swampers working with the Operator
- Participate in tailboard meetings, including identification of potential work site hazards
- Report potential hazards to Foremen or Journeymen
- Adhere to all company specific and industry specific safety regulations
- Operation
- Operate and maintain matting installation and service equipment
- Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
- Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/ or required
- Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored
- Advise the Foremen of any requirements for maintenance or repairs
- Perform routine maintenance
- Provide manual labor assistance as required
- All other duties as required by crews
Knowledge:
- Grade 12 education would be considered an asset
- Minimum class 3 driver’s license with clean drivers abstract would be considered an asset
- Class 1 driver’s license would be considered an asset
- 1 3 years’ experience operating equipment similar in nature
- Previous experience operating a MAT Grapple Loader an asset
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Good team player
Skills and Abilities:
- Communication
- Knowledge of truck and equipment safety
- Knowledge of operation of the following but not limited to: MAT Grapple Loader, front end loaders, dozers, graders, etc.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance
- Ability to read and write English
- Ability to take direction
- Ability to give direction to labourer or swamper
- Ability to work in a team
- Physically fit with the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
- Ability to work in inclement weather
- Knowledge of trade safely practices, procedures, and the safety requirements outlined in Company’s Health and Safety policies and those outlined by our clients on specific projects

- Demonstrate sound work ethics
Working Conditions:
- Overtime as required
- Travel will be required
- Ability to attend and conduct presentations
