Science Education Writer Grades 4-8, Grades 9-12

Nelson is actively seeking freelance Science Education Writers, for elementary and secondary specializations respectively, to join our dynamic team of digital learning resource creators. Do you love storytelling and creating engaging, easy-to-understand science content with a purpose? Our science education team is involved in developing concept-based learning objects, labs and investigations, digital interactives, hands-on engagement tools, assessments, and more.

This role will involve research, creative input, editorial expertise, sound writing/authoring skills, understanding of children and youth learning levels, quick turnaround, and a flexible mindset to shift between projects as required.

How You Will Make an Impact:

• Capacity to absorb and process new material quickly, including K12 curriculum, existing classroom resources, and manuscript templates for digital content

• Research and compose educational content that is pedagogically accurate, instructionally sound, written at the right reading level, relevant to the target audience, and aligned in style and tone with the respective products
• Create content that is responsive to equity, diversity, and inclusion and authentic representation
• Research, propose, develop, write, edit, and collaborate on content in a variety of online formats
• Create, select, and edit photos, graphics, video, audio, and interactive elements
• Select, re-write and/or edit copy or text written by others

• Effectively brainstorm with other members of the team to generate ideas and creative concepts
• Work with portfolio math/sci publisher and science program specialist to coordinate the completion of specialized content, to write and/or edit
• Participate in quality control review for documents written by other writers when requested

What You Can Bring to This Role:

• experience and interest in making digital content, including writing app content, podcasting, or video creation

• experience in translating difficult scientific concepts into scaffolded, manageable pieces that students are excited to read and learn from
• experience and interest in digital file formats and how to gather and edit media such as video, audio, and photos
• exceptional communication skills (written and oral). We are looking for someone who can write and produce engaging learning experiences
• familiarity with editorial or digital content workflow management
• a knack for creative problem-solving and working independently and collaboratively while managing multiple learning objects

• ability to produce and revise content quickly and prioritize to meet deadlines
• willingness and capacity to learn any or all the above

As a Science Education Writer, you will be tasked with writing and developing genuine, engaging, and experiential digital learning experiences across Nelson’s resource library. In no more than 300 words, please submit a writing sample highlighting and explaining an emerging technology of your choice to either a Grade 5 or Grade 9 audience. Your written piece should address the emerging technologies expectation of the new Ontario curriculum, be an appropriately leveled digital learning object, and show a strong understanding of science and technology.
