Internal/External Employment Opportunity

Position Title: Client Engagement Worker

Component/Team: ICM

Status: One Year Contract, 0.8 FTE Part-Time to 1.0 FTE Full-Time (28 to 35 hours per week)

Salary Scale: $49,449 - $59,587 annualized salary plus benefits, both pro-rated to part-time status

Start Date: Immediately

Position Description:

The Client Engagement Worker engages and assesses the needs of street involved clients who use illegal drugs and are eligible for Oasis and Safer Supply services. The Client Engagement Worker provides practical supports including health card assistance, ODSP applications and income tax filing. The Client Engagement Worker collaborates on team-based care plans developed by Oasis Medical team and Safer Supply Teams. The Client Engagement Worker may provide supports to clients in the Oasis Clinic setting, in an outreach setting with community partners or by providing accompaniment as part of care plans.


Reporting Relationship:

The position is directly accountable to the Case Management Team Lead, through the Team Lead to the Director of Addiction and Mental Health Services and through the Director to the Executive Director.

Skills, Education and Experience:

Requirements for this position include:

Education and Language

  • A College degree in Social Services or a related discipline
  • Be a member in good standing of a college or order such as the College of Registered Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written
  • Under the Centre’s designation to provide French Language Services:
  • French (oral expression): Advanced
  • French (oral comprehension): Advanced +
  • French (reading comprehension): Intermediate +


Professional Experience

  • Two to four years front line client experience in a social service setting, particularly with individuals living with Concurrent Disorders
  • Experience engaging precontemplative/contemplative clients
  • Experience with motivational interviewing or other engagement strategies
  • Experience working with a broad range of populations, including: at risk youth, street-involved people, people with mental health and/or addictions issues, multi-cultural communities and people experiencing significant barriers to access.
  • Experience in outreach/accompaniment in the community.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to substance use disorder, mental health issues and homelessness
  • Ability to work within a harm reduction framework
  • Knowledge of motivational interviewing techniques
  • Knowledge and experience of implementing care plans
  • Knowledge and experience with supportive counseling techniques
  • Knowledge of community resources in Ottawa
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Strong assessment and triage skills
  • Strong crisis intervention and assessment skills
  • Ability to de-escalate crisis situations in a therapeutic manner
  • Strong suicide intervention skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work one on one with clients in the community
  • Ability to work under stress with multiple demands and tasks
  • Demonstrated flexibility, good judgment, initiative amp; creativity
  • Respect and valuing of the diversity of communities and individuals
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise strong decision-making skills and deal with unpredictable situations
  • Ability to identify client service needs and refer appropriately
  • A non-judgmental and positive attitude towards street-involved people, people who are HIV+ or who are at risk of becoming HIV+ and people with substance use disorder, mental illness and concurrent disorders
